Hints & Tips
From MairiMeDance

The first dance song is one of the most emotional moments for the bride and groom at the reception.

The lyrics of the song don’t always have to mean something to you as a couple.  The first dance song, should just make you both smile.  Whether it be a fun, upbeat song or a romantic slow ballad, all that is important, is that you enjoy your first dance as a married couple.

Here at MairiMeDance, we customise the perfect dance that best reflects your personality.  MairiMeDance pride themselves on relaxed, fun and friendly lessons, bespoke to you as a couple.  Most definitely the most fun you will have in the lead up to the big day!

Top tips for your first dance…..

  • Choose a song that is danceable and one that is wedding appropriate. If you are not going to take dance lessons and just plan to shuffle, then if the song is longer than 3 minutes, then please have your band or DJ invite the bridal party onto the dance floor half way through.

  • Consider both of your shoes. If you can get access to your dance floor prior to the big day, test your shoes, as some floors can be very slippy! Cola or scoring your shoes with a knife can help reduce slippiness.

  • Even if you are just going to wing it on the day, there is no harm trying out some moves in your dress prior to the big day (obviously not with future husband or wife!) Lowered sleeves can prevent you lifting arms and doing an impromptu dip or back bend can cause problems in a strapless dress!

  • Ensure your bustle is properly secured with a safety pin, you don’t want your train falling down, cause you and your partner to slide around the dance floor!

  • If doing lifts, wear a skirt (or actual underskirt) similar to your dress and practice. If you get a chance on the day to freshen up, use this time to practice in your dress and heels.

  • If you are doing a choreographed dance, try and practice at least 5 minutes a night, to keep it fresh. Muscle memory is important to ensure confidence on the day. Play your song often so you know the tempo and words inside out and back to front! You may get sick of it, but this will help immensely.

  • On the day, during your first dance, I would advise, as much as possible, to look into your partner’s eyes. You don’t want to catch a family member or friend’s eye, which could cause you to lose focus and forget the next step. Also, looking towards your partner gives better lines.

  • If doing choreography, remember no one knows what you are supposed to be doing, so don’t make it obvious if you make a mistake. If in doubt, shuffle!

  • Most importantly smile and enjoy. This is your first dance, as a married couple. Try to forget there are hundreds of eyes on you and make your dance one you will remember forever.
